About the Hong Kong MPF Calculator

This MPF calculator works out the Mandatory Provident Fund contributions you and your employer make each month in Hong Kong and projects how large your MPF account could be when you can withdraw it at 65. Enter your monthly relevant income, current age and balance, and an expected investment return after fund fees.

Mandatory contributions follow the MPFA rules for monthly-paid employees: your employer pays 5% of relevant income and so do you, but only on income up to the maximum relevant income level of HK$30,000 a month, so each side pays at most HK$1,500. If you earn less than the minimum relevant income level of HK$7,100 a month, you do not contribute, but your employer still pays 5%. You can also add voluntary contributions from you or your employer.

Your salary grows once a year at the rate you choose, while the HK$7,100 and HK$30,000 levels are held at today’s values. Contributions are added monthly and returns compound monthly. Results are in future Hong Kong dollars and are not adjusted for inflation, so compare them with your expected retirement costs in the same terms.

With the default inputs, the projected mpf balance is HK$3,033,742.83. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

Formula and method

Employer = 5% × min(RI, 30,000)
Employee = 0 if RI < 7,100, else 5% × min(RI, 30,000)
B_{m+1} = B_m × (1 + r/12) + contributions

Relevant income (RI) is your monthly wages, salary, commission, bonus and allowances. Your employer contributes 5% of it, capped at the HK$30,000 maximum relevant income level. You contribute the same 5% unless your income is below the HK$7,100 minimum level, in which case you pay nothing. Voluntary contributions are added as a percentage of full income with no cap.

The projection adds each month’s contributions to the balance and compounds at one-twelfth of the annual return. Your income rises by the salary growth rate at the start of each new year, but the minimum and maximum levels stay fixed, so once you earn above HK$30,000 mandatory contributions stop growing.

Worked examples

HK$25,000 a month, age 30, HK$100,000 balance

You and your employer each pay 5% × HK$25,000 = HK$1,250 a month. With 2% yearly raises your income passes HK$30,000 after about 10 years, after which contributions stay at HK$3,000 a month. Over 35 years you and your employer put in about HK$1.23 million, and at 4% the balance grows to about HK$3.03 million.

Low earner below HK$7,100

At HK$6,500 a month you are below the minimum relevant income level, so only your employer contributes 5% = HK$325 a month. Over 10 years that is HK$39,000 of contributions, which grow to about HK$47,856 at 4%.

High earner with 5% voluntary top-up

At HK$60,000 mandatory contributions are capped at HK$1,500 each because only the first HK$30,000 counts. A 5% voluntary contribution on full income adds HK$3,000, for HK$6,000 a month in total.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the MPF contribution?+

Employers and employees each contribute 5% of the employee’s relevant income. For monthly-paid employees, income above HK$30,000 is ignored, so the maximum is HK$1,500 each a month. Employees earning less than HK$7,100 a month do not contribute, but their employer still pays 5%.

When can I withdraw my MPF?+

MPF benefits are generally payable when you reach 65. Early withdrawal is allowed from 60 on early retirement, and on grounds such as permanently leaving Hong Kong, total incapacity, terminal illness, small balance or death.

What counts as relevant income for MPF?+

Relevant income includes wages, salary, leave pay, fees, commissions, bonuses, gratuities, perquisites and allowances paid in money. Severance payments and long service payments are specifically excluded.

Do self-employed people pay MPF?+

Yes. Self-employed persons must contribute 5% of their relevant income, subject to the same minimum and maximum relevant income levels, either monthly or yearly. They do not receive an employer contribution.

What return should I assume for MPF?+

Returns depend heavily on the funds you choose. Use a figure after fund fees: conservative funds are likely to return far less than equity funds over the long run. The Default Investment Strategy reduces risk automatically from age 50 to 64.
