About the Canada OAS Calculator

This OAS calculator estimates the Old Age Security pension you would receive in Canada, after the three things that change it most: how many years you lived in Canada after age 18, how long you delay the start past 65, and how much of it the recovery tax (the OAS clawback) takes back when your net world income is high.

It is built for Canadians planning when to start OAS, retirees whose pension, RRIF or investment income is near the clawback threshold, and newcomers working out a partial pension. A full pension needs 40 years of residence after 18; with fewer years you get one-fortieth per year, as long as you have at least 10. Each month you defer after 65 adds 0.6%, up to 36% at 70, and the pension rises a further 10% from age 75.

Default amounts are the maximum OAS for October–December 2026 ($762.50 a month at 65–74, $838.75 at 75+), which are indexed to inflation every quarter. The clawback is 15% of net world income above the threshold for the income year: $93,454 for 2025 income (repaid July 2026–June 2027) and $95,323 for 2026 income. Figures exclude the Guaranteed Income Supplement.

With the default inputs, the monthly oas after clawback is $762.50. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

Formula and method

OAS = Full OAS × min(Y, 40)/40 × (1 + 0.006 × M) × (1.10 if 75+); Clawback = min(OAS×12, 15% × (Income − Threshold))

The pension starts from the full monthly amount for the current quarter. It is prorated by years of residence in Canada after 18 (Y, capped at 40, with a 10-year minimum), then increased by 0.6% for every month M you delay after 65 (maximum 60 months, or 36%). From the month after you turn 75 the pension is 10% higher.

The recovery tax equals 15% of your net world income above the threshold for that income year, and is taken from your OAS payments in the following July–June period. It cannot exceed the OAS you receive, so OAS disappears entirely once income reaches the threshold plus annual OAS ÷ 0.15.

Y
Years of residence in Canada after age 18
M
Months deferred after age 65 (0–60)
Threshold
Recovery-tax minimum income for the income year ($95,323 for 2026)

Worked examples

Full pension at 65 with $80,000 income

With 40 years of residence and a start at 65 you receive the full $762.50 a month ($9,150 a year). Income of $80,000 is under the $95,323 threshold for 2026, so nothing is clawed back.

Deferred to 70 with $110,000 income

Deferring 60 months adds 36%, so the pension is $762.50 × 1.36 = $1,037 a month, or $12,444 a year. Income is $14,677 above the $95,323 threshold; 15% of that is $2,201.55 recovered, leaving about $853.54 a month.

Partial pension: 25 years of residence, age 75+

25 years gives 25/40 = 62.5% of the full pension: $762.50 × 0.625 = $476.56, and the 10% age-75 increase brings it to about $524.22 a month. Income of $60,000 is well below the threshold.

Frequently asked questions

How much is OAS per month in 2026?+

For October to December 2026 the maximum OAS is $762.50 a month for ages 65 to 74 and $838.75 for ages 75 and over. Amounts are reviewed every January, April, July and October to keep pace with the Consumer Price Index.

What is the OAS clawback threshold?+

The recovery tax applies when net world income exceeds $93,454 for the 2025 income year (recovered July 2026–June 2027) and $95,323 for the 2026 income year. You repay 15% of the income above the threshold.

Should I defer OAS to age 70?+

Each month of deferral adds 0.6%, up to 36% at 70. Deferring tends to pay off if you expect to live past roughly 82, have other income to bridge the gap, or would otherwise lose OAS to the clawback in your late 60s.

How many years in Canada do I need for full OAS?+

A full pension requires 40 years of residence in Canada after age 18. With at least 10 years (20 if you live abroad when you apply) you receive a partial pension of one-fortieth of the full amount per year of residence.

Is OAS taxable?+

Yes. OAS is taxable income and is reported on a T4A(OAS) slip. The recovery tax is calculated on your return, and future monthly payments are reduced in advance based on your last assessed income.

Does the 10% increase at 75 apply automatically?+

Yes. Service Canada increases your OAS pension by 10% automatically starting the month after your 75th birthday, on top of any deferral increase you earned by starting later than 65.
