About the Essay Paragraph Planner
This essay paragraph planner turns a word limit into a concrete outline. Enter the target length of your essay and the paragraph size you are aiming for, and it works out how many body paragraphs you need, how many words to spend on the introduction and conclusion, and roughly how many pages the finished essay will fill.
It is meant for students facing a "1,500 words" or "2,000 words" assignment, for applicants drafting personal statements, and for anyone who wants to budget words before writing so that no section balloons while another gets squeezed. Planning the split up front also makes it easier to check progress section by section while you draft.
The defaults follow common academic guidance: an introduction and a conclusion of about 10% of the total each, and body paragraphs of roughly 100–200 words. These are conventions rather than rules — follow your instructor or style guide if it says otherwise. Page counts assume about 275 words per double-spaced page (12 pt Times New Roman, 1-inch margins).
With the default inputs, the total paragraphs is 7. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.
How to use the essay paragraph planner
- 1Enter the required essay length in words.
- 2Set your preferred body paragraph length (150 words is a good middle ground).
- 3Adjust the introduction and conclusion shares if your instructor expects different proportions.
- 4Read the total and body paragraph counts, then use the table as your outline.
- 5Track each section against its word budget while you draft.
Formula and method
The planner first reserves the introduction and conclusion as percentages of the total word count W (10% each by default) and rounds them to whole words. Everything left over is the body. Dividing the body by your target paragraph length P and rounding to the nearest whole number gives the number of body paragraphs (at least one), and the body words are then shared evenly between them, so the actual paragraph length may be a little above or below your target.
Total paragraphs are the body paragraphs plus one introduction and one conclusion. Page estimates divide the word count by about 275 words per double-spaced page or 550 per single-spaced page, typical for 12 pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins; other fonts and headings change this.

Worked examples
How many paragraphs is a 1,000-word essay?
The introduction and conclusion each take 10% of 1,000 words, or 100 words. The remaining 800 words divided by a 150-word target is 5.33, which rounds to 5 body paragraphs of 160 words each — 7 paragraphs in total, or about 3.6 double-spaced pages.
Classic five-paragraph essay of 500 words
Reserving 50 words each for the introduction and conclusion leaves 400 body words. 400 ÷ 125 = 3.2, which rounds to 3 body paragraphs of about 133 words — the familiar five-paragraph structure on just under two double-spaced pages.
2,500-word research paper with longer paragraphs
An 8% introduction is 200 words and a 7% conclusion is 175 words, leaving 2,125 for the body. 2,125 ÷ 200 = 10.6, so the plan uses 11 body paragraphs of about 193 words — 13 paragraphs overall, roughly 9 double-spaced pages.
Frequently asked questions

How long should an essay introduction be?+
A common guideline is about 10% of the total word count, so roughly 100 words for a 1,000-word essay or 250 words for a 2,500-word essay. Very short essays may need a slightly larger share to fit a hook and thesis.

How many pages is a 1,500-word essay?+
About 5.5 double-spaced pages or under 3 single-spaced pages in 12 pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. Larger fonts such as Arial or headings and block quotes make it longer.
Do I have to hit the word count exactly?+
Most instructors accept about 10% either side of the stated length unless they say otherwise, but some treat the limit as strict. Check the assignment brief, and whether the reference list counts toward the total.
