About the Egypt Salary Tax Calculator

This Egypt salary tax calculator estimates take-home pay from a monthly gross salary. It deducts the employee’s 11% social insurance contribution, applies the EGP 20,000 annual personal exemption and then calculates salary tax (ضريبة المرتبات) with the progressive brackets of the Income Tax Law as amended by Law No. 7 of 2024, which still apply to salaries in 2026.

It is useful for employees in Cairo, Alexandria or the New Administrative Capital checking a payslip, expatriates evaluating an Egyptian offer, and HR teams estimating payroll. The calculator shows the annual tax, the monthly withholding and the effective tax rate.

A distinctive feature of Egyptian tax is that higher earners lose the lower brackets: above EGP 600,000 of annual net income the 0% band disappears, and as income rises past EGP 700,000, 800,000, 900,000 and 1.2 million each further lower band is removed. Social insurance is charged on your insurable wage, which is capped by law and revised every January — enter the figure on your payslip if it is lower than your salary. Other tax-exempt items (such as private insurance premiums or specific allowances) are not modelled.

With the default inputs, the net salary per month is EGP 15,427.50. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

Formula and method

Net income = Annual gross − 11% × insurable wage × 12 − EGP 20,000; Tax = Σ bracket rate × slice

Social insurance is 11% of the monthly insurable wage. Annual taxable net income is gross salary minus those contributions and the EGP 20,000 personal exemption, rounded down to the nearest EGP 10. For net income up to EGP 600,000 the brackets are 0% to 40,000, 10% to 55,000, 15% to 70,000, 20% to 200,000, 22.5% to 400,000 and 25% above.

Above EGP 600,000 the lowest bands fall away: from 600,001 to 700,000 tax starts at 10%; 700,001–800,000 starts at 15% up to 70,000; 800,001–900,000 at 20% up to 200,000; 900,001–1,200,000 at 22.5% up to 400,000 then 25%; and above EGP 1.2 million, 25% applies to the first 1.2 million and 27.5% to the rest. Monthly withholding is the annual tax divided by the number of salaries.

Worked examples

EGP 20,000 a month

Social insurance is EGP 2,200 a month. Annual net income is 240,000 − 26,400 − 20,000 = EGP 193,600: 0% on 40,000, 10% on 15,000, 15% on 15,000 and 20% on 123,600 gives EGP 28,470 tax, leaving about EGP 15,428 a month.

EGP 8,000 a month

After EGP 10,560 social insurance and the 20,000 exemption, net income is EGP 65,440. Tax is 10% of 15,000 plus 15% of 10,440 = EGP 3,066 a year (EGP 255.50 a month).

EGP 80,000 a month, insurable wage EGP 16,000

Social insurance is capped at 11% of the EGP 16,000 insurable wage. Net income of EGP 918,880 falls in the 900,001–1,200,000 column, so the 0%–20% bands are lost: 22.5% on the first 400,000 plus 25% on 518,880 = EGP 219,720.

Frequently asked questions

What are the salary tax brackets in Egypt?+

Under Law 7 of 2024, annual net income up to EGP 40,000 is taxed at 0%, then 10% to 55,000, 15% to 70,000, 20% to 200,000, 22.5% to 400,000 and 25% above, with 27.5% on income over EGP 1.2 million. Higher earners lose the lower bands.

What is the personal exemption in Egypt?+

Every taxpayer receives an annual personal exemption of EGP 20,000, deducted from net income before the brackets are applied. It replaced the previous EGP 15,000 exemption from March 2024 for salary tax.

How much social insurance does an employee pay in Egypt?+

Employees contribute 11% of their insurable wage under the Social Insurance and Pensions Law (No. 148 of 2019), and employers pay 18.75%. The insurable wage has a legal minimum and maximum that are increased each January.

Why does my tax jump when I earn more than EGP 600,000?+

The law removes the tax-free and low-rate bands for higher incomes. Once annual net income exceeds EGP 600,000, the 0% band no longer applies, so tax rises by more than the marginal rate alone would suggest at each threshold.

Are social insurance contributions tax-deductible?+

Yes. Employee social insurance contributions are deducted from salary before tax is calculated, which is why this calculator subtracts them before applying the personal exemption and brackets.
