About the UK State Pension Age Calculator

This UK State Pension age calculator works out the exact day you reach State Pension age from your date of birth, using the timetable written into the Pensions Act 1995 as amended by the Pensions Acts 2007, 2011 and 2014. It shows the date, your exact age on that day, which rule applies to you and how long you still have to wait from any date you choose.

State Pension age is currently 66. It rises to 67 for people born on or after 6 April 1960 — in monthly steps for anyone born between 6 April 1960 and 5 March 1961 — and is legislated to rise to 68 between 2044 and 2046 for people born from 6 April 1977. The same age is also the qualifying age for Pension Credit and the age at which you stop paying employee National Insurance.

The calculator reflects the law as it stands in 2026. The government is required to review State Pension age regularly and a review is under way, so the rise to 68 could be brought forward or changed by future legislation. Sex only matters for people born before 6 December 1953, when women’s pension age was still being equalised with men’s.

Formula and method

SPA date = date of birth + statutory age (66, 66 + n months, 67 or 68)
or a fixed date from the statutory tables for transition cohorts

The calculator applies the rules in Schedule 4, paragraph 1 of the Pensions Act 1995 as amended. For most people the State Pension age is a fixed age — 66, 67 or 68 — and you reach it at the start of the corresponding birthday. People born between 6 April 1960 and 5 March 1961 get 66 plus between 1 and 11 months, depending on which “6th to 5th” monthly period their birthday falls in.

For transition cohorts (women born 6 April 1950 to 5 December 1953, everyone born 6 December 1953 to 5 October 1954, and everyone born 6 April 1977 to 5 April 1978) the law gives a fixed calendar date instead of an age, so the calculator looks up the date for your monthly period. When adding months lands on a day that does not exist (for example 31 July 1960 + 66 years 4 months), the last day of the month is used, exactly as rule 7A of the Act specifies.

Worked examples

Born 15 June 1970

Anyone born between 6 March 1961 and 5 April 1977 reaches State Pension age at 67, so this person can claim on their 67th birthday, 15 June 2037. Counting from 1 October 2026 that is 10 years, 8 months and 14 days away.

Born 31 July 1960 (month-end case)

A July 1960 birthday falls in the 6 July – 5 August period, which adds 4 months to age 66. There is no 31 November, so rule 7A of the Act treats this person as reaching 66 years and 4 months on 30 November 2026.

Woman born 20 May 1953

Women born between 6 May and 5 June 1953 reached State Pension age on the fixed date of 6 November 2016 under the equalisation timetable, when this woman was 63 and a half. A man born the same day reached it at 65.

Born 10 September 1977 (rise to 68)

Births from 6 September to 5 October 1977 reach State Pension age on the fixed date of 6 March 2045 under the Pensions Act 2007 timetable for the rise to 68.

Frequently asked questions

What is the State Pension age now?+

In 2026 the State Pension age is 66. It is rising to 67 between 2026 and 2028 for people born on or after 6 April 1960, and anyone born from 6 March 1961 to 5 April 1977 will reach it at exactly 67.

When will the State Pension age rise to 68?+

Current law raises it to 68 between 2044 and 2046 for people born from 6 April 1977, and it is 68 for everyone born on or after 6 April 1978. The government reviews this regularly and could bring the change forward through new legislation.

Do I get the State Pension automatically?+

No. You should get a letter about two months before you reach State Pension age explaining how to claim. If you do not, you can claim online, by phone or by post. You can also defer claiming to get a higher weekly amount later.

Can I take my workplace or private pension earlier?+

Yes. Private and workplace pensions have their own minimum age, which is currently 55 and rises to 57 from 6 April 2028. That is separate from State Pension age, which only controls when the State Pension and Pension Credit can start.

Is the State Pension age the same for men and women?+

Yes, for everyone born on or after 6 December 1953. Women’s State Pension age was equalised with men’s between 2010 and 2018, so sex only changes the answer for people born before that date.

Do I stop paying National Insurance at State Pension age?+

Employees stop paying Class 1 National Insurance from the date they reach State Pension age, even if they keep working. Income Tax still applies to earnings and pension income above your Personal Allowance.
