About the Streaming Royalty Calculator
This calculator turns a number of streams into an estimated payout using the per-stream rate you enter, then follows the money down the chain: the distributor's commission, the label's share (if you are signed), and your own percentage of whatever reaches the artist side. It also works backwards to show how many streams you would need to take home a target amount.
It is meant for independent artists planning a release budget, band members working out what a split means in practice, and managers comparing a distribution deal that takes a commission with one that charges a flat fee. Change the inputs to model different rates, deals and splits side by side.
Streaming services do not pay a fixed amount per stream. Spotify, for example, pools revenue and pays rights holders according to their share of total streams, so the effective rate varies by country, subscription type, month and service. Use the effective rate from your own distributor statements (total paid ÷ streams) for the most realistic result; the default is only a placeholder. This covers recording (master) royalties only — songwriting and publishing royalties are paid separately.
With the default inputs, the your take-home is $400.00. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.
How to use the streaming royalty calculator
- 1Enter the number of streams for the period or track.
- 2Enter the per-stream rate from your own distributor statements.
- 3Add any distributor commission and the label's share.
- 4Set your split of the artist share if you work with others.
- 5Read your take-home and the streams needed to reach your target.
Formula and method
Gross revenue is streams multiplied by the effective per-stream rate. The distributor's commission comes off first, then the label keeps its share of what remains (for a signed artist this is 100% minus the artist royalty rate), and the remainder is the artist share, which is divided among band members or featured artists according to your split.
Multiplying the rate by each "kept" fraction gives your net per stream; dividing a target amount by it gives the streams required. The tool assumes all deductions are percentages of revenue and ignores recoupment of advances, taxes and currency conversion, which can delay or reduce real payments.

Worked examples
Independent artist, 100k streams
100,000 streams at $0.004 earn $400. With a flat-fee distributor, no label and no split, all $400 is yours, and $1,000 would take 250,000 streams.
Signed band member, 1 million streams
$3,500 gross minus 15% distribution ($525) leaves $2,975. The label keeps 80% ($2,380), leaving $595 for the band; a quarter of that is $148.75. At $0.00014875 per stream, $1,000 needs about 6.72 million streams.
Duo splitting 50/50
250,000 streams at $0.004 bring in $1,000. Split evenly, each member takes $500 — $2 per thousand streams.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Spotify pay per stream?+
There is no fixed rate. Spotify pays rights holders a share of a revenue pool based on their share of total streams, so the effective amount per stream changes with listener country, subscription mix and month. Divide your total royalties by your streams on a statement to get your own rate.
Does this include songwriting royalties?+
No. It covers master (sound recording) royalties paid through your distributor or label. Songwriters and publishers earn separate mechanical and performance royalties, collected through PROs, mechanical rights organisations and publishing administrators.
What is a typical label royalty split?+
Traditional record deals often pay the artist a royalty in the range of 15–25% of revenue, while distribution and services deals can pay 70–85% or more. Enter the label's share as 100% minus your royalty rate; check your contract for recoupment terms.
How many streams do I need to make $1,000?+
Divide $1,000 by your net per stream. At $0.004 with no deductions that is 250,000 streams; after a 20% label royalty and a four-way split it can be several million. The calculator shows the exact figure for your inputs.
Is there a minimum number of streams before Spotify pays?+
Yes. Since early 2024 Spotify only generates recorded royalties for tracks that reached at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months. Streams of tracks below that line earn nothing, so very small catalogues can earn less than streams × rate suggests.
Why is my payout lower than streams × rate?+
Distributor commissions, label shares, unrecouped advances, collaborator splits, withholding tax and currency conversion all reduce what reaches you. Payments also arrive months after the streams happened.
