About the Social Media Image Size Guide
This social media image size guide lists the recommended dimensions, minimum sizes and file limits for the images you upload most: Instagram square, portrait and landscape posts and Stories, YouTube thumbnails, Shorts thumbnails, channel banners and watermarks, Facebook covers and link previews, LinkedIn Page logos, covers and shared images, Pinterest image and video Pins and website favicons. Every figure comes from the platform’s own help centre or developer documentation, linked below, and was checked in October 2026.
Pick a placement and enter the size of your photo or design, and the calculator tells you whether it already fits, which aspect ratio it is, exactly how many pixels to crop to hit the target ratio without stretching, and how much to scale afterwards. It is aimed at social media managers, designers, YouTubers and developers setting og:image tags.
Platforms change their layouts regularly and often display images smaller than the recommended upload size; uploading at the recommended size keeps images sharp on high-density phone screens. Where a platform specifies only an aspect ratio (Instagram Stories and Reels), the pixel size shown is that ratio at 1,080 px wide.
How to use the social media image size guide
- 1Choose the placement, such as Instagram portrait post or YouTube thumbnail.
- 2Read the recommended size, ratio, minimum and file limit.
- 3Enter your image’s width and height in pixels.
- 4Crop to the suggested crop size, then resize to the recommended size.
- 5Use the table to compare sizes across a platform.
Formula and method
To fit an image of w × h pixels into a placement of W × H without stretching, the calculator first crops it to the target aspect ratio W ÷ H, keeping as much of the image as possible. If your image is wider than the target ratio it keeps the full height and trims the sides to h × W ÷ H; otherwise it keeps the full width and trims the top and bottom to w × H ÷ W. Values are rounded to whole pixels.
The resize percentage is the recommended width divided by the cropped width. Below 100% means you are scaling down (good); above 100% means the source has fewer pixels than recommended and will be upscaled, which looks soft. Aspect ratios are reduced with the greatest common divisor, or shown as decimals such as 1.91:1 when the reduced numbers are large.

Worked examples
Camera photo for an Instagram portrait post
A 4000 × 3000 photo is 4:3, much wider than Instagram’s 4:5 portrait ratio. Keeping the full 3,000 px height, the width becomes 3000 × 1080 ÷ 1350 = 2,400 px. Resizing 2,400 px down to 1,080 px is 45%.
Screen recording frame as a YouTube thumbnail
A 1920 × 1080 frame is already 16:9, so no cropping is needed. YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160, so it would have to be scaled up 200% to match — 1920 × 1080 is still well above the 640 px minimum width.
Square logo as a YouTube channel banner
The banner is 16:9, so a 3000 × 3000 square keeps its width and is trimmed to 3000 × 9 ÷ 16 = 1,687.5, rounded to 1,688 px tall. Scaling 3,000 px to 2,560 px is 85.3%. Keep the logo inside the central 1235 × 338 px safe area.
Frequently asked questions
What size should an Instagram post be?+
Instagram accepts photos from 320 to 1,440 px wide with aspect ratios between 4:5 (portrait) and 1.91:1 (landscape). Common upload sizes are 1080 × 1080 (square), 1080 × 1350 (portrait) and 1080 × 566 (landscape).
What is the best YouTube thumbnail size?+
YouTube’s help centre recommends a 16:9 thumbnail at 3840 × 2160 pixels, at least 640 pixels wide, as JPG or PNG. Desktop uploads can be up to 50 MB; uploads from the mobile app are limited to 2 MB.
What size is a YouTube channel banner?+
Upload at 2560 × 1440 (16:9), with a minimum of 2048 × 1152 and a file size of 6 MB or less. Only the central 1235 × 338 px area is guaranteed to show on every device.
What size should an og:image be?+
Facebook recommends at least 1200 × 630 pixels at about 1.91:1, with a hard minimum of 200 × 200 and a maximum file size of 8 MB. The same size works well for LinkedIn, which suggests 1200 × 627.
What is the Facebook cover photo size?+
Facebook says Page cover photos must be at least 400 × 150 px and load fastest as an sRGB JPG of 851 × 315 px under 100 KB. The sides are cropped on phones, so keep important content centred.
What size should a favicon be?+
For Google Search the favicon must be square and at least 8 × 8 px, and Google recommends larger than 48 × 48 px. Providing 48, 96 and 192 px versions covers browsers, search results and Android home screens.
