About the Rug Size Calculator

This rug size calculator recommends a standard rug size — 5 × 8, 8 × 10, 9 × 12 and so on — from the room and the furniture the rug has to anchor. Choose a living room, dining room or bedroom, enter the room size and the key furniture dimensions, and it works out the minimum rug size the layout needs and the largest size that still leaves a strip of bare floor around the edges.

Living rooms are sized from the seating group: “all legs on” means the rug extends about 6 in beyond the furniture on every side, while “front legs on” lets the rug stop about 2 ft inside the back of the sofa and chairs. Dining rugs add room for chairs to slide back (24 in each side of the table is the usual guide). Bedroom rugs extend about 24 in beyond the sides and foot of the bed and sit under the lower two-thirds of it.

Designers commonly leave 12–18 in of floor showing between the rug and the walls (8 in or so in small rooms). If no standard size satisfies both the furniture and the border, the calculator falls back to the largest size that fits and says so — a custom or bound carpet rug is the other option.

How to use the rug size calculator

  1. 1Choose the room type and enter the room length and width.
  2. 2Set the floor border you want around the rug.
  3. 3Enter the seating area, dining table or bed size.
  4. 4Read the recommended standard size and check the fit table.
  5. 5Tape the outline on the floor with painter’s tape before you buy.

Formula and method

Need = furniture + allowances; Space = room − 2 × border; pick the smallest standard rug with Need ≤ rug ≤ Space

The minimum rug size depends on the room: seating area + 1 ft (6 in each side) for an all-legs-on living room, seating area − 4 ft (about 2 ft inset each side) for front-legs-on, table + 2 × chair allowance for a dining room, and bed width + 2 × extension by two-thirds of the bed length + extension for a bedroom. The maximum is the room size minus the floor border on every side.

Sizes are compared with their short sides and long sides matched, so the rug can be turned to suit the room. The calculator recommends the smallest standard size that meets the minimum and still fits within the border; if none does, it shows the largest standard rug that fits.

Worked examples

20 × 15 ft living room, front legs on

A 12 × 10 ft seating group with front legs on needs a rug at least 8 × 6 ft (2 ft in from each side). The room allows up to 12 × 17 ft with an 18 in border, so 6 × 9 is the smallest standard size that works; any size up to 12 × 15 would also fit.

Dining table 72 × 40 in

Adding 24 in on each side for chairs gives 72 + 48 = 120 in (10 ft) by 40 + 48 = 88 in (7.33 ft). An 8 × 10 ft rug covers that, and it is also the largest standard size that fits a 14 × 12 ft room with an 18 in border.

Queen bed in a 13 × 12 ft bedroom

A queen is 60 × 80 in. With 24 in beyond each side the rug must be 108 in (9 ft) across, and covering two-thirds of the bed plus 24 in needs 77.3 in (6.44 ft). An 8 × 10 ft rug, turned across the bed, covers both and fits within the border.

King bed in a small 11 × 10 ft room

A king ideally needs a rug about 10.3 ft across, but an 11 × 10 ft room with an 18 in border only leaves 8 × 7 ft. The largest standard size that fits is 5 × 8 ft, so the calculator flags it as smaller than ideal.

Frequently asked questions

What size rug do I need for a queen bed?+

An 8 × 10 ft rug placed across the bed is the most common choice for a queen, giving about 2 ft of rug on each side. A 6 × 9 works in a tighter room, or use two runners along the sides.

What size rug goes under a dining table?+

Add about 24 in on every side of the table so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. A 6-seat table around 72 × 40 in usually needs an 8 × 10 ft rug.

How much floor should show around an area rug?+

Leave about 12 to 18 in of bare floor between the rug and the walls in most rooms, and at least 8 in in small rooms, so the rug looks intentional rather than wall-to-wall.

Should all furniture legs be on the rug?+

In large rooms, all legs on a big rug anchors the seating group. In smaller rooms, putting only the front legs on is the standard look and allows a smaller, cheaper rug.

What size rug for a 12 × 12 living room?+

With an 18 in border a 12 × 12 room allows up to a 9 × 9 area, so a 6 × 9 rug with front legs on is typical; an 8 × 10 fits only if you cut the border to 12 in along the direction of its 10 ft side.
