ft

For a roof, the horizontal run from eave to ridge (one side).

E.g. 2 for both sides of a gable roof.

sq ft

Windows and doors (a 3 × 5 ft window is 15 sq ft).

Typical thickness

7/16 in OSB or 15/32 in plywood wall sheathing is common for studs at 16–24 in on center.
  • 285 sq ft plus 10% waste needs 10 sheets of 4 × 8 ft (32 sq ft each).
  • At $28.00 per sheet the panels cost about $280.00.

About the Plywood Sheet Calculator

This plywood calculator estimates how many sheets of plywood or OSB a job needs. Enter the length and width (or height) of the surface, how many identical surfaces there are, any window and door openings to subtract, and the sheet size; for roofs, add the pitch so the sloped area is used instead of the flat footprint. It returns the number of whole sheets including a waste allowance, the covered area and the material cost.

It is meant for framers, remodelers and DIYers sheathing walls, laying subfloor, decking a roof, building a shed or lining a garage. A 4 × 8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft; taller walls are often sheathed with 4 × 9 or 4 × 10 ft panels to span from sill plate to top plate in one piece.

Area-based estimates assume offcuts get reused where possible. A 10% waste allowance suits simple rectangles; use 15% or more for roofs with hips and valleys, many openings, or cut-up floor plans. For exact cutting of small projects, lay the pieces out on a sheet diagram.

With the default inputs, the sheets needed is 10. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the plywood sheet calculator

  1. 1Choose wall, floor, roof or custom.
  2. 2Enter the length and width (wall height, or roof run from eave to ridge).
  3. 3Set how many identical surfaces there are and, for roofs, the pitch.
  4. 4Subtract the area of windows and doors.
  5. 5Pick the sheet size, waste allowance and price to see sheets and cost.

Formula and method

Sheets = ⌈(L × W × √(1 + (P/12)²) × N − Openings) × (1 + Waste) ÷ Sheet area⌉

The surface area is length × width for each surface, multiplied by the number of identical surfaces. For roofs, the horizontal run is converted to the sloped length with the pitch factor √(1 + (rise/12)²), so a 6/12 roof is about 11.8% larger than its footprint. Window and door openings are then subtracted.

The net area is increased by the waste allowance to cover cutting losses at edges, openings and seams, divided by the area of one sheet (32 sq ft for 4 × 8), and rounded up to whole sheets. Cost is the whole-sheet count times the price per sheet.

L, W
Length and width (or height / run) of one surface in feet
P
Roof pitch, inches of rise per 12 in of run (0 for walls and floors)
N
Number of identical surfaces
Waste
Waste allowance as a decimal (10% = 0.10)

Worked examples

40 ft wall, 8 ft tall, with 35 sq ft of openings

The wall is 40 × 8 = 320 sq ft, minus 35 sq ft of openings = 285 sq ft. Adding 10% waste gives 313.5 sq ft, or 313.5 ÷ 32 = 9.8 sheets, so buy 10 sheets for $280.

24 × 32 ft subfloor

A 768 sq ft floor with 5% waste needs 806.4 sq ft of panels, which is 25.2 sheets, so 26 sheets of 3/4 in subfloor at $45 cost $1,170.

Gable roof 40 ft long, 12 ft run each side, 6/12 pitch

Each side is 40 × 12 = 480 sq ft of footprint; at 6/12 the pitch factor is √(1 + 0.25) = 1.118, so both sides total 1,073.3 sq ft. With 10% waste that is 1,180.6 sq ft ÷ 32 = 36.9, so 37 sheets.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet does a sheet of plywood cover?+

A standard 4 × 8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft. A 4 × 9 covers 36 sq ft, 4 × 10 covers 40 sq ft and 4 × 12 covers 48 sq ft.

How many sheets of plywood do I need for a 12 × 12 room?+

A 12 × 12 floor is 144 sq ft, or 4.5 sheets of 4 × 8. With 10% waste that is about 158 sq ft, so buy 5 sheets.

How much waste should I allow for plywood?+

About 10% for simple walls and floors, 15% for roofs with hips, valleys and dormers or walls with many openings, and 5% for large open rectangles where offcuts can be reused.

Is OSB or plywood better for sheathing?+

Both are accepted structural panels when they carry the right span rating. OSB is usually cheaper and more uniform; plywood tolerates getting wet and dries out with less swelling at the edges.

What thickness plywood should I use for a roof?+

For rafters or trusses at 24 in on center, 7/16 in OSB or 15/32 in plywood rated 24/16 is common. Heavier snow loads or tile roofs may call for 19/32 in or thicker; follow the panel span rating and local code.
