About the Round Robin Schedule Generator
This round robin generator builds a complete league schedule in which every team or player meets every other one exactly once — or twice, home and away, with the double round robin option. Paste names one per line, or just enter how many teams you have, and it lays out each round with its fixtures so that nobody plays twice in the same round.
It suits sports leagues, pickleball and tennis ladders, chess and table-tennis clubs, esports groups, office tournaments and classroom games. With an odd number of entries one team sits out each round with a bye, and every team receives exactly one bye per cycle.
The schedule uses the classic circle method: one team stays fixed while the others rotate one position each round, which guarantees each pairing appears once. The first-listed team alternates home and away; copy the plain-text schedule to share it or paste it into a spreadsheet.
With the default inputs, the total matches is 15. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.
How to use the round robin schedule generator
- 1Paste team or player names, one per line, or switch to entering a number of teams.
- 2Turn on double round robin if everyone should play each other twice.
- 3Review the rounds, matches per round and byes.
- 4Copy the schedule text to share it or paste it into a spreadsheet.
Formula and method
In a single round robin each of the n teams meets the other n − 1 teams once, and each match involves two teams, so the number of matches is n(n − 1) ÷ 2. With an even number of teams every team can play in every round, so n − 1 rounds are enough; with an odd number a dummy “bye” team is added, giving n rounds in which one team rests.
The circle method fixes the first team and rotates everyone else one position clockwise after each round. Pairing position 1 with the last position, 2 with the second-to-last and so on guarantees every pair meets exactly once. A double round robin repeats the schedule with home and away swapped.

Worked examples
Six-team league
Six teams need 6 × 5 ÷ 2 = 15 matches. With an even number of teams, all six play in each of the 5 rounds, 3 matches per round.
Seven players, home and away
Seven players meet 21 times in a single cycle; doubling gives 42 matches. An odd count needs 7 rounds per cycle (14 in total), with one player taking a bye each round and 3 matches played.
10-team league by number
Ten teams play 10 × 9 ÷ 2 = 45 matches over 9 rounds of 5 matches each, so every team plays 9 games.
Frequently asked questions
How many games are in a round robin?+
For n teams a single round robin has n(n − 1) ÷ 2 games: 6 teams play 15, 8 teams play 28 and 10 teams play 45. A double round robin, home and away, doubles those numbers.
How many rounds does a round robin take?+
With an even number of teams it takes n − 1 rounds, because every team plays once per round. With an odd number it takes n rounds, since one team must sit out each round with a bye.
How do byes work with an odd number of teams?+
A placeholder “bye” is added to make the count even. Whoever is paired with the bye rests that round. Over a full cycle every team receives exactly one bye.
What is the circle method for round robin scheduling?+
Write the teams in two rows, fix one team in place and rotate the others one position after each round. Teams facing each other in the two rows play. This guarantees each pair meets exactly once.
What is the difference between single and double round robin?+
In a single round robin each pair meets once. In a double round robin they meet twice, usually once at each venue, as in most football and soccer leagues.
