About the Pet Cost Calculator
This pet cost calculator estimates what a dog or cat costs over its lifetime. Choose the type (and, for dogs, the size), its expected lifespan, the adoption or purchase price and which optional costs apply: pet insurance, professional grooming, dental cleaning and boarding or pet sitting. You get the first-year cost, the ongoing annual, monthly and daily cost, and a lifetime total with a year-by-year breakdown.
It is meant for anyone deciding whether they can afford a pet, choosing between a dog and a cat, or adding a pet line to a household budget. The first year costs the most because of spay/neuter surgery, first vaccines, microchipping, training and equipment.
The cost figures come from the ASPCA’s estimates of pet care costs (2021 update), which give one figure for a dog and one for a cat. We raise them to August 2026 prices using the U.S. Consumer Price Index for pets, pet products and services, which rose about 28% over that time. Two parts are our own assumptions: food cost for small and large dogs is scaled from the ASPCA dog figure by body size, and dental cleaning is counted every year. These are US averages for a healthy pet, so local prices can differ a lot. Emergencies and chronic illness are not included and can add thousands in a single year. The lifetime total raises each year’s costs by the yearly increase you choose.
With the default inputs, the lifetime cost is $42,742.35. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

Formula and method
Each cost item starts from the ASPCA 2021 estimate: for a dog, food $300, routine care and preventives $410, supplies/treats/license $140, insurance $516, professional grooming $300, dental $500, boarding $25 a day and $1,030 of one-time setup. For a cat: food $225, care and preventives $300, litter and supplies $251, insurance $348, dental $300, boarding $25 a day and $455 setup. Every figure is multiplied by 236.756 ÷ 184.921 ≈ 1.2803, the change in the BLS CPI for pets, pet products and services from the 2021 average to August 2026.
Our assumptions: dog food is scaled by 0.5 (small), 1.0 (medium) or 1.7 (large), roughly in line with body weight to the 0.75 power; dental cleaning is counted every year when switched on; and other dog costs do not change with size. For the lifetime total, each year’s running cost rises by your chosen yearly increase and all years are added to the one-time costs. Set the increase to 0% to see the total in today’s prices. Emergency and chronic-illness care are not included.

Worked examples
Small dog, 12 years, all options
In 2021 dollars: food $150 (half the ASPCA dog figure for a small dog), care $410, supplies $140, insurance $516, grooming $300, dental $500 and 10 boarding days at $25 = $2,266. Multiplying by 1.2803 gives about $2,901 a year ($242 a month). The first year adds the $250 adoption fee and $1,030 × 1.2803 ≈ $1,319 setup, for about $4,470. Over 12 years with 3% yearly increases the total is about $42,742.
Cat, 15 years
In 2021 dollars: food $225, care $300, litter and supplies $251, insurance $348, dental $300 and 10 boarding days ($250) = $1,674, or about $2,143 a year after the 1.2803 price adjustment. With a $150 adoption fee and $455 × 1.2803 ≈ $583 setup, the first year is about $2,876, and 15 years with 3% increases total about $40,594.
Large dog, 10 years, no boarding or dental, today’s prices
In 2021 dollars: food $510 (1.7 × $300), care $410, supplies $140, insurance $516 and grooming $300 = $1,876, or about $2,402 a year at 2026 prices. Adding the $250 adoption fee and $1,319 setup to 10 years at today’s prices gives about $25,587.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to own a dog per year?+
The ASPCA’s 2021 estimate of basic yearly costs for a dog was $1,391 (food, routine vet care, preventives, insurance, toys, treats and license), or roughly $1,780 at 2026 prices. Professional grooming, dental cleaning and boarding can push the total to $2,500–$3,500.
How much does a cat cost per year?+
The ASPCA’s 2021 estimate for a cat was $1,149 a year including litter and insurance, or roughly $1,470 at 2026 prices. A yearly dental cleaning and some boarding add several hundred dollars more.
What is the lifetime cost of a dog?+
With this calculator’s defaults, a dog costs roughly $25,000–$65,000 over a 10–15 year life, depending on size, services and price rises. Emergency surgery or chronic illness can add several thousand dollars more.
Is pet insurance worth it?+
The ASPCA put insurance at about $516 a year for a dog and $348 for a cat in 2021. It pays back a share of covered accident and illness bills after a deductible. It is most useful for breeds prone to costly conditions, or if a sudden large vet bill would be hard to pay.
What costs are people most likely to forget?+
Emergency vet visits, dental cleanings, prescription food, boarding during travel, pet deposits or monthly pet rent, replacing damaged items and end-of-life care are the most commonly overlooked expenses.
