About the Cat Age Calculator
This cat age calculator converts your cat’s age into the equivalent human age. Enter your cat’s age in years and months and you get its “human years”, the life stage vets use for care planning (kitten, young adult, mature adult or senior) and a chart covering every year from kitten to 20.
The old “multiply by seven” rule is wrong for cats: they mature very fast in the first two years and then age steadily. The calculator uses the widely accepted veterinary conversion — the first year equals about 15 human years, the second adds about 9 more (24 at age two), and every year after that adds roughly 4.
Use it to understand how your cat’s needs change: a 12-year-old cat is roughly a 64-year-old person, which is why vets recommend twice-yearly checkups, senior bloodwork and diet changes from around age 10–11. The result is an approximation; genetics, weight and indoor versus outdoor life all affect how a cat actually ages.

Formula and method
The calculator uses the standard veterinary cat-age conversion. A cat reaches the equivalent of about 15 human years at its first birthday and about 24 at its second, because kittens reach sexual and skeletal maturity within roughly a year. After age two each cat year counts as about four human years.
Ages between whole years are interpolated linearly, so 6 months is about 7.5 human years. Life stages follow the common veterinary grouping: kitten (under 1), young adult (1–6), mature adult (7–10) and senior (over 10).

Worked examples
5-year-old cat
The first two years count as 24 human years. The next three years add 4 each (12), so a 5-year-old cat is about 36 in human years — a young adult.
8-month-old kitten
Eight months is 0.667 of the first year, and the first year equals 15 human years, so the kitten is about 10 in human terms.
14-year-old senior cat
After 24 human years for the first two years, the remaining 12 years add 4 each (48), giving 72 human years. At 14 your cat is a senior and benefits from twice-yearly checkups.
Frequently asked questions

Is the “multiply by 7” rule right for cats?+
No. Multiplying by seven underestimates young cats (a 1-year-old is closer to 15 than 7) and overestimates old ones. The 15 / 9 / 4 method matches how cats actually mature.
