About the Passport Validity Calculator
This passport validity calculator checks whether your passport will be accepted for a trip. Many countries require a passport to remain valid for some time after you arrive or leave — six months is the most common requirement, while the Schengen area asks for three months beyond your planned departure and a passport issued less than ten years before you arrive. Enter your passport dates and travel dates, pick the rule that applies, and it shows the date your passport must be valid until, how many days you have to spare (or are short), and the latest trip it will cover.
It is useful when booking flights months ahead, renewing a passport before a big trip, or checking a child’s passport, which usually has a shorter validity period. Airlines check these rules at check-in and can refuse boarding even if the destination’s border officers might have been flexible.
Rules differ by destination and by your nationality, and some countries measure from arrival while others measure from departure. Always confirm the current requirement on your government’s official travel advice page for the destination (for example GOV.UK foreign travel advice or the U.S. State Department country pages) before you travel.
How to use the passport validity calculator
- 1Enter your passport’s expiry date (and issue date if you are visiting the Schengen area).
- 2Enter the dates you arrive in and leave the destination country.
- 3Choose the validity rule your destination applies, or set a custom number of months.
- 4Read the result, the date your passport must be valid until and the days to spare.
- 5If it fails or the margin is small, start a renewal before booking non-refundable travel.
Formula and method
Each rule names a reference date — your arrival or your departure — and a number of months of validity required beyond it. The calculator adds those calendar months to the reference date (a month-end date rolls back to the last day of shorter months) to get the date your passport must still be valid on. If the expiry date is on or after that date the passport meets the rule; the margin is the number of days between the two.
The Schengen rule adds a second test: the passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the day you arrive, which matters for older passports that were issued with extra months carried over from a previous one. The latest-date figure works backwards, subtracting N months from the expiry date to show the last arrival or departure date the passport can cover.
- N
- Months of validity required by the destination
- margin
- Days between the required date and the actual expiry date
Worked examples
Six months beyond arrival — passes
Arriving on 20 December 2026, the passport must be valid until 20 June 2027. It expires on 15 August 2027, giving 56 days to spare, and would cover any arrival up to 15 February 2027.
Six-month rule — fails
Leaving on 5 January 2027 under a 6-months-beyond-departure rule, the passport must be valid until 5 July 2027. It expires 30 April 2027, 66 days too early, so it needs renewing.
Schengen trip with an old passport
The expiry easily clears 3 months beyond the 20 December departure (256 days to spare), but the passport was issued 10 years and 16 days before arrival, so it fails the Schengen 10-year issue rule.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 6-month passport rule?+
Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your date of arrival (or, for some, your departure). For example, GOV.UK travel advice says Thailand requires an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive. Airlines enforce it at check-in.
How long must my passport be valid for Europe?+
For the Schengen area your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave, and it must have been issued less than 10 years before the day you arrive. Both conditions must be met.
Does the 6-month rule count from arrival or departure?+
It depends on the country. Some measure six months from the date you enter and others from the date you leave, so check the destination’s official entry requirements and choose the matching rule in the calculator.
Can I travel if my passport expires in less than 6 months?+
Yes, to countries that only require validity for the length of your stay (or 3 months). Plenty of destinations only require the passport to be valid for the duration of the stay, but rules depend on your nationality, so always confirm the current requirement before booking.
How early should I renew my passport before travelling?+
Renew well before the date your passport would fall inside a destination’s validity window — ideally before it has 9 months left if you travel often, since renewal processing times can stretch to several weeks or more during busy seasons.
