About the Packing List Generator
This packing list generator builds a ready-to-use checklist for your trip. Tell it how many nights you will be away, what the weather will be like and what kind of trip it is — a relaxed holiday, beach break, business trip, hiking adventure or city break — and it works out how many of each clothing item to bring, adds the right documents, toiletries and electronics, and groups everything by category so nothing gets forgotten.
Clothing quantities scale with the number of days: one top and one pair of underwear and socks per day (plus a spare), and bottoms, layers and sleepwear that can be re-worn. If you will have access to laundry, clothing is capped at a week’s worth; without laundry it is capped at two weeks, which is enough for most people even on longer trips. International trips add a passport, visa documents, insurance details and a plug adapter, and carry-on travellers get a reminder about the liquids bag.
The checklist is a starting point. Copy it, tick items off as you pack and add anything personal such as contact lenses, prescription medication or kids’ items.

Formula and method
The list starts from essentials everyone needs — ID, wallet, phone, charger and basic toiletries — then scales clothing to the trip. Each day gets a fresh top plus underwear and socks, with one spare pair of underwear and socks (business trips get a dress shirt per day and casual tops for half the days); trousers, sweaters and thermal layers can be re-worn and are packed at one per three days. With laundry available clothing is capped at a week, otherwise at two weeks.
Climate adds outerwear and sun or cold-weather gear, the trip type adds specialist items such as swimsuits, business attire or hiking kit, and international or carry-on trips add passport documents, a plug adapter and a liquids bag. Duplicate items are merged, and the bag suggestion is based on the number of clothing pieces.

Worked examples
5-night leisure trip in mild weather
Six days of clothing means 7 pairs of underwear and socks, 6 tops, 2 bottoms, 2 sets of sleepwear and walking shoes, plus a light jacket and a sweater — 27 pieces, which fits in a carry-on. With documents, toiletries, electronics and extras the list has 43 items.
10-night international beach holiday
Eleven days without laundry needs 12 underwear and socks, 11 tops, 4 bottoms and 4 shorts, plus swimsuits, a cover-up, flip-flops and a sun hat — 51 clothing pieces, so a large checked bag makes sense. A passport, visa documents, insurance details and an adapter are added.
3-night business trip in winter
Four days of basics, four dress shirts plus two casual tops, a suit, dress shoes and a full set of cold-weather layers add up to 32 pieces. Wearing the coat and boots on the plane would bring it within carry-on range.
3-week hiking trip with laundry
With laundry, clothing is capped at seven days even for a 21-day trip. Hiking boots, a rain jacket, quick-dry tops, a daypack, first-aid kit and headlamp are added for the outdoors.
Frequently asked questions
How many outfits should I pack for a week?+
For seven days most people pack seven tops, eight pairs of underwear and socks, two or three bottoms and one or two layers. If you can do laundry mid-trip you can halve the tops and still stay fresh.
What should I pack for a long trip?+
Pack for about one week and plan to do laundry. Beyond a week, extra clothes add weight without much benefit, and most destinations have laundromats, hotel laundry or sinks for hand-washing.
What are the liquid rules for carry-on bags?+
In the US the TSA 3-1-1 rule limits liquids, gels and aerosols to 3.4 oz (100 ml) containers in one quart-size bag per passenger. Many other countries use similar 100 ml limits, though some airports with new scanners have relaxed them — check before you fly.
What documents do I need for international travel?+
You usually need a passport valid for your whole stay (often six months beyond it), any required visa or electronic travel authorisation, travel insurance details, and copies of bookings. Check the entry rules of your destination before you travel.
How can I pack lighter?+
Choose a colour palette so every top matches every bottom, wear your heaviest shoes and jacket on travel days, use packing cubes, and rely on laundry rather than packing a clean outfit for every day of a long trip.
