About the Golf Club Length Calculator

This golf club length calculator estimates how much longer or shorter than standard your clubs should be, using the two measurements club fitters start with: your height and your wrist-to-floor distance. It then applies that adjustment to a full set so you can see recommended lengths for the driver, fairway woods, hybrid, irons and wedges in inches and centimetres.

Measure wrist-to-floor standing straight in your normal golf shoes, arms hanging relaxed, from the crease where the wrist meets the hand down to the floor. Wrist-to-floor matters because two golfers of the same height can have very different arm lengths. By default the calculator averages the height-based and wrist-based adjustments; you can also choose either one alone.

Standard lengths vary by about half an inch between brands, and women’s sets are typically about one inch shorter than men’s. Treat the result as a starting point — a dynamic fitting that checks lie angle and impact position is the best way to confirm length before ordering custom clubs.

How to use the golf club length calculator

  1. 1Stand straight in golf shoes with arms hanging relaxed.
  2. 2Measure from the crease of your wrist to the floor, and note your height.
  3. 3Enter both measurements in inches or centimetres.
  4. 4Choose whether to average them or use one measurement only.
  5. 5Read the adjustment and the recommended lengths for each club.

Formula and method

Length = standard length + adjustment · adjustment = average(height band, wrist-to-floor band)

Static fitting charts map height and wrist-to-floor distance to a length change in half-inch steps. This calculator uses bands 3 inches of height wide, with standard length for golfers 5 ft 9 in to just under 6 ft, and bands 1.5 inches of wrist-to-floor wide, with standard for 34 to 35.5 inches (about 49% of height, the typical wrist height for an adult). Each band above or below adds or removes ½ inch, up to ±2 inches.

In the default mode the two adjustments are averaged, so someone whose arms are long for their height ends up between the two. The adjustment is added to typical men’s standard lengths — 45.5" driver and 37" 7-iron, with ½" gaps through the irons — and centimetres are inches × 2.54. Brands differ, so apply the same adjustment to your chosen model’s standard lengths.

Height band
−2" (under 5 ft) to +2" (6 ft 9 in and over), standard at 5 ft 9 in–5 ft 11.9 in
Wrist-to-floor band
−2" (under 29.5") to +2" (40" and over), standard at 34"–35.4"

Worked examples

5 ft 10 in golfer with 34.5" wrist-to-floor

A 70" height and 34.5" wrist-to-floor both fall in the standard bands, so off-the-rack lengths — a 37" 7-iron and 45.5" driver — should fit.

Tall golfer: 6 ft 4 in, 37.5" wrist-to-floor

76" is two height bands above standard (+1") and 37.5" wrist-to-floor is two wrist bands above (+1"), so the set should be 1 inch longer: a 38" 7-iron and 46.5" driver.

Metric: 160 cm tall, 80 cm wrist-to-floor

160 cm is 63.0" (−1½" band) and 80 cm is 31.5" (−1" band). Averaging gives −1¼", so the 7-iron should be 35.75" or about 90.8 cm.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure wrist-to-floor for golf clubs?+

Stand upright on a hard floor in the shoes you play in, shoulders relaxed and arms hanging naturally. Have someone measure from the major crease where your wrist meets your hand straight down to the floor.

What is the standard length of a 7-iron?+

Most men’s steel-shafted 7-irons are about 37 to 37.25 inches, and women’s are usually about an inch shorter. Exact standards vary by brand and by whether the set is designed with stronger lofts.

Is wrist-to-floor more important than height?+

Many fitters weight wrist-to-floor more heavily because it captures arm length as well as height. Two players who are both 6 ft can need clubs an inch apart if one has much longer arms.

What happens if my clubs are too long or too short?+

Clubs that are too long tend to make you stand too upright, choke down, or hit the ball off the heel with shots starting left; clubs that are too short make you hunch and can cause toe strikes and shots to the right (for a right-hander).

Should I change lie angle when I change club length?+

Usually yes. A common builder’s rule of thumb is about 1 degree of lie angle per half inch of length change, because a longer club naturally sits more upright at address.
