About the Gold Price per Gram Calculator
Gold is quoted internationally in price per troy ounce, but jewelers and shoppers think in grams, 10-gram lots, tola or kilograms — and in karats rather than pure gold. This calculator converts a spot price per troy ounce into all of those at once, for the karat you choose and for every common karat in the table.
Use it to check whether a shop’s per-gram rate is reasonable, to translate a news headline about the ounce price into a local jewelry rate, or to see how much less 18K or 14K should cost than 24K. You can add a percentage for dealer premium, import duty or local taxes to approximate a retail rate.
Prices are for the metal only: making charges, hallmarking and sales tax on jewelry are extra. The default of 4,000 per troy ounce is just an example — enter today’s spot price in whatever currency you use; the results come out in the same currency.
With the default inputs, the price per gram (selected karat) is $117.89. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.
How to use the gold price per gram calculator
- 1Enter the current gold spot price per troy ounce in your currency.
- 2Pick the karat you want a price for.
- 3Add a premium or tax percentage if you want an approximate retail figure.
- 4Read the per-gram, per-10-gram, per-tola and per-kilo prices, and compare karats in the table.
Formula and method
A troy ounce is exactly 31.1034768 grams, so dividing the spot price S by 31.1034768 gives the price of one gram of pure (24-karat) gold. Multiplying by K ÷ 24 scales it to the gold content of a lower karat — 22K is 91.67% gold, 18K is 75%.
The optional markup m adds a premium, import duty or tax as a percentage. Per-10-gram, per-tola (11.6638 g), per-kilogram and per-pennyweight (1.5552 g) prices are the per-gram price multiplied by those weights.
- S
- Spot price per troy ounce of pure gold
- K
- Karat (24 = pure)
- m
- Optional markup as a decimal
Worked examples
22K price at $4,000 per ounce
$4,000 ÷ 31.1035 = $128.60 per gram of pure gold. 22K is 22/24 pure, so it is $117.89 per gram, $1,178.86 per 10 g and $1,375.00 per tola.
18K at $3,600 per ounce
Pure gold is $3,600 ÷ 31.1035 = $115.74 per gram; 18K is 75% of that, $86.81 per gram. Per troy ounce of 18K alloy that is $2,700, or $135 per pennyweight.
24K per kilo with a 2% dealer premium
Adding 2% to $128.60 gives $131.18 per gram, so a kilogram bar would cost about $131,175 — 32.15 ounces at $4,080.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert the gold price per ounce to per gram?+
Divide the price per troy ounce by 31.1035. For example, $4,000 per ounce ÷ 31.1035 = $128.60 per gram of 24K gold. Multiply by karat ÷ 24 for lower purities.
Why is the jeweler’s price higher than my calculation?+
Spot is the wholesale price of pure metal. Retail coins and jewelry add dealer premiums, making charges, hallmarking and local taxes such as GST or VAT, which can add a few percent to over 20%.
How much is 22K gold compared with 24K?+
22K gold is 22/24 = 91.67% gold, so its metal value per gram is 91.67% of the 24K price. In India 22K jewelry is hallmarked 22K916, reflecting 91.6% purity.
How many grams are in a tola?+
A tola is 11.6638 grams (180 grains, or 0.375 troy ounce). The per-tola price is therefore exactly 37.5% of the price per troy ounce for the same karat.
