Eligibility

Eligible — immediate unreduced annuity
  • 30 years of FERS service ÷ 40 = 75% of your $1,800 age-62 Social Security estimate.
  • The supplement gets no cost-of-living adjustment before 62 and ends the month you turn 62, even if you delay Social Security.

About the FERS Supplement Calculator

This FERS supplement calculator estimates the special retirement supplement (also called the FERS annuity supplement or SRS) that bridges the gap between retiring from federal service and becoming eligible for Social Security at 62. Enter your birth year, retirement age, years of FERS service and your Social Security estimate at 62, and it shows whether you qualify, the monthly amount, how long it lasts and how much any work income would reduce it.

Following OPM’s method, the supplement approximates the Social Security benefit you earned while under FERS: your age-62 Social Security estimate × (years of FERS civilian service ÷ 40). It is paid to voluntary retirees with an immediate unreduced annuity (MRA with 30 years, or age 60 with 20 years), and to involuntary or early-out (VERA/DSR) retirees once they reach their Minimum Retirement Age. MRA+10 retirees, deferred retirees and disability retirees do not get it.

The supplement is subject to the Social Security earnings test: for every $2 of wages or self-employment income above the annual exempt amount ($24,480 in 2026) it is reduced by $1. Your FERS basic annuity itself is not reduced. Special-provision retirees (law enforcement, firefighters, air traffic controllers) are exempt from the earnings test until they reach MRA. Use the Social Security estimate from your SSA statement for the most accurate result.

With the default inputs, the monthly fers supplement (after earnings test) is $1,350.00. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the fers supplement calculator

  1. 1Enter your birth year so the calculator can find your Minimum Retirement Age.
  2. 2Enter your planned retirement age and years of FERS civilian service.
  3. 3Enter your Social Security estimate at 62 from your SSA statement.
  4. 4Choose your retirement type and any earnings you expect after retiring.
  5. 5Review eligibility, the monthly supplement and the total paid until 62.

Formula and method

Supplement = SS benefit at 62 × (whole years of FERS service ÷ 40)
Earnings test reduction = (earnings − exempt amount) ÷ 2 per year

OPM estimates the Social Security benefit you would get at 62 for a full 40-year career and pays the share that corresponds to your FERS civilian service, counting whole years only. If you retire at 57 with 30 years and a $1,800 age-62 estimate, the supplement is $1,800 × 30 ÷ 40 = $1,350 a month until 62.

If you have earned income after retiring, the supplement is reduced by $1 for every $2 above the Social Security annual exempt amount ($24,480 for 2026), down to zero. The calculator applies the reduction evenly across the year; OPM actually adjusts the following year based on the earnings you report. Involuntary and early-out retirees start receiving the supplement at their MRA, and special-provision retirees are exempt from the earnings test until MRA.

Worked examples

MRA+30 at 57, no work income

Born in 1968, the MRA is 56 and 8 months. Retiring at 57 with 30 years and a $1,800 estimate gives $1,800 × 30/40 = $1,350 a month for the 60 months until 62, about $81,000 in total.

Working part time after retiring

Earning $40,000 is $15,520 over the $24,480 exempt amount, so the supplement is reduced by half of that — $7,760 a year, or $646.67 a month — leaving about $703 a month.

Early out at 52 with 25 years

A VERA retiree born in 1974 has an MRA of 57, so the supplement of $2,000 × 25/40 = $1,250 a month starts at 57, not at retirement, and runs for 60 months to 62.

Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for the FERS supplement?+

Employees who retire on an immediate unreduced FERS annuity — at their MRA with 30 years or at 60 with 20 years — and involuntary or early-out (VERA/DSR) retirees once they reach MRA. Special-provision employees qualify too. MRA+10, deferred and disability retirees do not receive it.

How is the FERS supplement calculated?+

OPM takes your estimated Social Security benefit at age 62 and multiplies it by your years of FERS civilian service divided by 40. With 30 years of service you get 75% of the age-62 estimate; military service you bought back does not count toward the supplement.

When does the FERS supplement stop?+

It ends at the end of the month you turn 62, or earlier if you become entitled to Social Security, for example through disability. It stops at 62 even if you choose to delay claiming Social Security.

Does working reduce the FERS supplement?+

Yes. The supplement follows the Social Security earnings test: it is reduced by $1 for every $2 of earned income above the annual exempt amount, which is $24,480 for 2026. Pensions, TSP withdrawals and investment income do not count as earnings.

Does the FERS supplement get a COLA?+

Regular FERS retirees receive no cost-of-living adjustments on the annuity or supplement before age 62. Because the supplement ends at 62, it is effectively fixed for its whole life; special-provision retirees are treated differently for annuity COLAs.
