About the Ceiling Fan Size Calculator
This ceiling fan size calculator recommends a blade span (the diameter swept by the blades) from the floor area of the room, and a downrod length from the ceiling height, so the fan moves enough air and the blades sit at a comfortable, safe height. For very large rooms it suggests splitting the space between two or more fans.
It is meant for anyone shopping for a new fan or replacing an old one in a bedroom, living room, great room or covered porch. Size bands follow widely used industry guidance: roughly 29–36 in for rooms up to 75 sq ft, 36–42 in up to 144 sq ft, 44–50 in up to 225 sq ft, 50–54 in up to 400 sq ft and 56 in or larger beyond that.
Blades work best about 8–9 ft above the floor and must be at least 7 ft up. The blade height shown assumes the fan’s canopy and motor add about 12 in below the ceiling on top of the downrod; check the spec sheet of the fan you choose.

Formula and method
Blade span is chosen from the room area using the size bands in the chart: small rooms need small fans so the blades clear walls and furniture, while large rooms need a wider sweep to move air across the whole space. Rooms over 600 sq ft are split into zones of about 400 sq ft, one fan each.
Downrod length is picked so the blades end up roughly 8–9 ft above the floor. Up to 8 ft a flush or hugger mount is used; between 8 and 12 ft the downrod grows about 6 in per foot of ceiling (6 in at 9 ft, 12 in at 10 ft, 24 in at 12 ft); above 12 ft it grows about 12 in per foot. The result is rounded to the nearest stock downrod length.

Worked examples
12 × 14 ft bedroom with 9 ft ceiling
A 168 sq ft room falls in the 145–225 sq ft band, so a 44–50 in fan is right. A 9 ft ceiling calls for a 6 in downrod, putting the blades about 108 − 6 − 12 = 90 in, or 7.5 ft, above the floor.
20 × 25 ft great room with 12 ft ceiling
At 500 sq ft one large fan of 56–72 in covers the room. A 12 ft ceiling needs a 24 in downrod, so the blades hang about 9 ft above the floor.
10 × 10 ft office with an 8 ft ceiling
A 100 sq ft room needs a 36–42 in fan. With only 8 ft of height, a flush (hugger) mount keeps the blades at about 7 ft, the minimum safe clearance.
