About the Subscription Cost Calculator

This subscription cost calculator adds up everything you pay for on repeat — streaming services, music, cloud storage and software, gym memberships, news, gaming, delivery memberships and anything else — to show the real monthly and yearly total. Annual plans are spread across the year so they are counted fairly alongside monthly ones.

Small charges are easy to ignore individually but add up fast: a handful of $10–$15 services can quietly become a few thousand dollars a year. The breakdown chart shows which category costs the most, and the daily and 10-year figures put the total in perspective.

Enter what you pay for subscriptions you rarely use in the “would cancel” box to see what cancelling saves each year and what that money could grow to in ten years if invested instead. Check your bank and card statements and your phone’s app-store subscriptions list to find charges you may have forgotten.

With the default inputs, the monthly subscription total is $176.00. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the subscription cost calculator

  1. 1Open your bank, card and app-store statements and list every recurring charge.
  2. 2Enter monthly subscriptions in the matching categories.
  3. 3Add the yearly total of subscriptions billed once a year.
  4. 4Enter what you pay for services you rarely use in the cancel box.
  5. 5Review the monthly, yearly and 10-year totals and cancel what is not worth it.

Formula and method

Monthly = Σ monthly subscriptions + annual plans ÷ 12; Yearly = Monthly × 12; Daily = Yearly ÷ 365

All monthly subscription amounts are added together, and annual-billed plans are converted to a monthly equivalent by dividing by 12. The yearly cost is the monthly total times 12, the daily cost is the yearly cost divided by 365 days, and the 10-year cost is ten times the yearly cost with no price increases assumed.

The savings from cancelling are the monthly amount you would drop times 12. The invested value assumes that money is invested at the end of each month for 120 months at your chosen annual return, compounded monthly: C × ((1 + i)^120 − 1) ÷ i.

C
Monthly amount you would cancel
i
Monthly return (annual return ÷ 12)

Worked examples

Typical household subscriptions

The monthly subscriptions total $166, and $120 of annual plans adds $10 a month, for $176. That is $2,112 a year, about $5.79 a day, or $21,120 over ten years. Dropping $20 a month saves $240 a year, which would grow to about $3,462 in ten years at 7%.

Just two streaming services

A $15.49 video plan and an $11.99 music plan cost $27.48 a month, which is $329.76 a year — about 90 cents a day and nearly $3,300 over a decade.

Heavy subscriber cutting $40 a month

Monthly subscriptions of $140 plus $240 of annual plans ($20 a month) total $160 a month, or $1,920 a year. Cancelling $40 a month saves $480 a year; invested at 6% for ten years that becomes about $6,555.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the average person spend on subscriptions?+

It varies widely, and surveys have repeatedly found that people underestimate their own spending. The only reliable number is yours: add up every recurring charge on your statements with this calculator.

How do I find all my subscriptions?+

Review the last two or three months of bank and credit card statements, check the subscriptions list in the Apple App Store or Google Play, search your email for “receipt” or “renewal”, and look for annual charges from the past year.

Is it cheaper to pay for subscriptions annually?+

Often yes — annual plans frequently cost the equivalent of 10 to 11 months. They only save money if you keep using the service all year, so reserve them for subscriptions you are sure about.

How can I cut subscription costs without losing everything?+

Rotate streaming services month to month instead of paying for all at once, share family plans where the terms allow, downgrade to ad-supported tiers, cancel free trials before they convert, and use free alternatives such as library apps.

Why is the daily cost divided by 365 rather than 30?+

Dividing the yearly total by 365 gives an accurate average day. Dividing a monthly total by 30 slightly overstates the daily cost because the average month has about 30.4 days.
