About the State Estate & Inheritance Tax Calculator
This state estate and inheritance tax calculator estimates the death taxes a state may charge for deaths in 2026. Pick the state where the person lived, enter the taxable estate and, for inheritance-tax states, the relationship and share of one heir. It shows the state estate tax, the inheritance tax on that heir’s share, the state exemption, and a side-by-side comparison of what the same estate would owe in every estate-tax state covered.
Estate taxes are charged on the whole estate before it is distributed. They are calculated here for Connecticut ($15 million exemption, matching federal), Hawaii ($5.49 million), Maine ($7.16 million), Maryland ($5 million), Massachusetts ($2 million), Minnesota ($3 million), New York ($7.35 million, with its 105% cliff), Oregon ($1 million), Vermont ($5 million) and Washington ($3 million, using the 10%–20% table that applies to deaths from July 1, 2026; deaths from January to June 2026 used a $3,076,000 exclusion and rates up to 35%). Inheritance taxes are charged on what each heir receives and depend on the heir’s relationship: Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Maryland charges both.
Enter the taxable estate after debts, funeral and administration costs, and marital and charitable deductions. Gifts that a state adds back, out-of-state real property apportionment, special farm and business deductions, the Illinois, Rhode Island and District of Columbia estate taxes (whose interrelated calculations are not modelled here), Pennsylvania’s 5% early-payment discount and Nebraska county procedures are not included.
With the default inputs, the total state death tax is $180,800.00. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

Formula and method
Most states apply a graduated rate table to the taxable estate above their exemption: Hawaii 10%–20% above $5.49 million, Maine 8%/10%/12% above $7.16 million, Minnesota 13%–16% above $3 million, Washington 10%–20% above $3 million, and a flat 16% above $5 million in Maryland and Vermont and 12% above $15 million in Connecticut (capped at $15 million of tax). Oregon’s 10%–16% table applies to the taxable estate above $1 million (an estate of exactly $1 million or less owes nothing). Massachusetts computes the old federal state death tax credit on the taxable estate minus $60,000 and subtracts a $99,600 credit, with no tax at $2 million or less. New York applies its 3.06%–16% table and an applicable credit that phases out between 100% and 105% of the $7.35 million exclusion.
Inheritance taxes depend on who inherits. Spouses are exempt everywhere. Pennsylvania charges 4.5% to children, grandchildren and other lineal heirs, 12% to siblings and 15% to others. New Jersey exempts close family, taxes siblings and in-laws 11%–16% after $25,000, and others 15%–16%. Kentucky exempts close family (including nieces and nephews from 2026) and taxes in-laws, aunts and uncles 4%–16% and others 6%–16% after small exemptions. Nebraska charges 1% above $100,000 to close relatives, 11% above $40,000 to aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and 15% above $25,000 to others, with heirs under 22 exempt. Maryland charges 10% to heirs outside the exempt family group.

Worked examples
$4 million estate in Massachusetts
Massachusetts applies the old federal credit table to $4,000,000 − $60,000 = $3,940,000: $238,800 + 10.4% of $400,000 = $280,400. Subtracting the $99,600 credit leaves $180,800 of Massachusetts estate tax, even though no federal estate tax is due.
$8 million estate in New York (over the cliff)
At $8,000,000 the estate is more than 105% of the $7.35 million exclusion ($7,717,500), so the applicable credit is zero and the whole estate is taxed: $650,800 + 13.6% of $900,000 = $773,200.
$7.5 million estate in New York (inside the cliff)
The estate is $150,000 over the exclusion, 40.82% of the way to 105%. The credit is the tax on $7,350,000 × (1 − 0.4082) = $4,349,730, which is $318,769.76. Tax on $7.5 million is $705,200, so $386,430.24 is due.
Pennsylvania: niece inherits $200,000
Pennsylvania has no estate tax but taxes a niece or nephew at the 15% “other heirs” rate: 15% × $200,000 = $30,000.
New Jersey: sibling inherits $500,000
Siblings are Class C heirs in New Jersey. The first $25,000 is exempt and the next $475,000 is taxed at 11%, for $52,250.
Washington: $8 million estate
For deaths from July 1, 2026, Washington taxes the $5,000,000 above the $3 million exclusion using Table W: $550,000 + 18% of $1,000,000 = $730,000.
Frequently asked questions
Which states have an estate tax in 2026?+
Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington and the District of Columbia levy estate taxes. This calculator covers all of them except Illinois, Rhode Island and DC.
Which states have an inheritance tax?+
Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania charge inheritance tax on what heirs receive. Iowa’s inheritance tax was fully repealed for deaths on or after January 1, 2025. Maryland is the only state with both an estate tax and an inheritance tax.
What is the New York estate tax cliff?+
New York’s $7.35 million exclusion (2026) phases out between 100% and 105% of that amount. Once the taxable estate exceeds 105% — $7,717,500 — the exclusion disappears entirely and the whole estate is taxed from the first dollar, with rates up to 16%.
How much is the Massachusetts estate tax exemption?+
Since 2023 Massachusetts estates of $2 million or less owe nothing. Larger estates compute tax on the whole estate using the old federal credit table and then subtract a $99,600 credit, so the effective exemption is $2 million.
Do spouses pay state estate or inheritance tax?+
Property left to a surviving spouse is deductible for estate tax (the marital deduction) and exempt from inheritance tax in every state, though it may be taxed when the surviving spouse later dies.
Is state estate tax deductible on the federal return?+
Yes. Estate, inheritance, legacy or succession taxes paid to a state are deductible in computing the federal taxable estate under IRC §2058. Only estates above the $15 million federal exemption (2026) benefit.
