About the Rent Receipt Generator

This rent receipt generator creates a set of monthly rent receipts you can print, get signed by your landlord and submit to your employer as proof for a House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption claim (section 10(13A) of the Income-tax Act, 1961; from tax year 2026-27 the Income-tax Act, 2025 carries the same exemption under new section numbering). Each receipt shows the tenant and landlord names, the rented property, the rent period, the amount in figures and in words (in lakh/crore style), the payment mode and the receipt date.

It is built for salaried employees in India who pay rent and opt for the old tax regime — the default new regime (section 115BAC of the 1961 Act, now section 202 of the 2025 Act) does not allow the HRA exemption. Employers usually ask for receipts every quarter or once a year along with their investment-proof declaration (Form 12BB under the old rules). If your total rent for the year is more than ₹1,00,000, you must also give your landlord’s PAN; the generator flags this automatically.

Enter the details once, choose the first month and the number of months (for example April to March for a financial year), and copy the receipts. When rent is paid in cash above ₹5,000, receipts are usually signed across a ₹1 revenue stamp, so the generator adds a stamp line in that case. Receipts are built in your browser; nothing you type is stored. Use the HRA exemption calculator to see how much of your allowance becomes tax-free.

With the default inputs, the total rent covered is ₹240,000.00. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the rent receipt generator

  1. 1Enter your name, the landlord’s name and PAN, and the rented property’s address.
  2. 2Enter the monthly rent and the day you usually pay it.
  3. 3Pick the first month and how many months of receipts you need.
  4. 4Choose the payment mode (UPI, bank transfer, cheque or cash).
  5. 5Copy the receipts, print them, get them signed and submit them with your employer’s investment-proof declaration.

Formula and method

Total = Monthly rent × Months; PAN required if Monthly rent × 12 > ₹1,00,000

The generator creates one receipt per calendar month, starting on the 1st of the month you choose and ending on the last day of that month, so a financial-year set runs from 01-04 to 31-03. The total is the monthly rent times the number of receipts, and the amount is written out in words using the Indian numbering system (thousand, lakh, crore).

Employers ask for the landlord’s PAN when the rent paid in the year exceeds ₹1,00,000 (about ₹8,333 a month), based on CBDT guidance for HRA claims. The PAN rule is checked against twelve months of rent even if you generate fewer receipts. A revenue-stamp line is added for cash payments above ₹5,000, following the common practice under the Indian Stamp Act for receipts of that size.

Worked examples

Full financial year at ₹20,000 a month

Twelve receipts from April 2026 to March 2027 cover ₹2,40,000 of rent. Because yearly rent is above ₹1,00,000, the landlord’s PAN must be given to the employer and appears on each receipt.

Quarterly submission, ₹8,000 rent paid in cash

Three receipts for July to September total ₹24,000. Yearly rent of ₹96,000 is under ₹1,00,000, so the PAN is optional, but since each cash payment is above ₹5,000 the receipts include a line for a ₹1 revenue stamp.

Six months of receipts starting mid-year

If you moved in October, six receipts from October 2026 to March 2027 at ₹35,000 a month total ₹2,10,000 — the rent you can use in the HRA calculation for that part of the year.

Frequently asked questions

Are rent receipts mandatory for claiming HRA?+

Employers generally require rent receipts (or a rent agreement and payment proof) before allowing the HRA exemption in your TDS. Under long-standing CBDT guidance, employees receiving HRA of up to ₹3,000 a month need not produce receipts, but above that signed receipts are the standard proof submitted with Form 12BB.

When is the landlord’s PAN required for HRA?+

When the rent you pay in a year exceeds ₹1,00,000, you must provide the landlord’s PAN to your employer. If the landlord does not have a PAN, a declaration from the landlord to that effect, with name and address, is typically accepted.

Is a revenue stamp required on a rent receipt?+

A ₹1 revenue stamp is customarily affixed and signed by the landlord on receipts for cash payments above ₹5,000. For rent paid by bank transfer, UPI or cheque, the transaction record itself is proof of payment and a stamp is generally not needed.

Can I claim HRA under the new tax regime?+

No. The new (default) tax regime — section 115BAC of the 1961 Act, section 202 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 — does not allow the HRA exemption. You need to opt for the old regime to claim it — compare both with the old vs new tax regime calculator.

Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA?+

Yes, if you genuinely pay rent to a parent who owns the house, you can claim HRA. The parent must report the rent as income in their own return, and you should keep a rent agreement and bank transfer records. Rent paid to a spouse is generally not accepted.
