About the Pip Calculator
This pip calculator tells you how much one pip is worth on a forex trade, in your own account currency. Choose whether the pair is quoted to four decimals (like EUR/USD) or two (JPY pairs), enter your position size in lots and the current exchange rate, and tell it how your account currency relates to the pair. It returns the pip value, the value of a move of any number of pips, and a quick table for standard, mini and micro lots.
Knowing the pip value is the first step in sizing a position and setting a stop-loss: a 30-pip stop on one standard lot of EUR/USD risks $300, but the same stop on USD/JPY risks a different amount. Traders use it before every trade to keep risk per trade consistent.
Pick your account currency to label the results with the right symbol. A pip is the fourth decimal place (0.0001) for most pairs and the second decimal place (0.01) for pairs quoted in Japanese yen. Fractional “pipettes” (the fifth or third decimal) are one-tenth of a pip.
With the default inputs, the value per pip (account currency) is $10.00. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.
How to use the pip calculator
- 1Choose whether the pair is a JPY pair or a regular four-decimal pair.
- 2Enter your position size in lots and pick the lot type.
- 3Enter the pair’s current exchange rate.
- 4Tell the calculator how your account currency relates to the pair, and add a conversion rate if needed.
- 5Enter a pip move (such as your stop-loss distance) to see the money at risk.
Formula and method
One pip is the smallest standard price step: 0.0001 for most currency pairs and 0.01 for pairs quoted in yen. Multiplying the pip size by your position size in units gives the pip value in the quote (second) currency of the pair — for example 100,000 × 0.0001 = 10 USD on EUR/USD.
If your account is in the quote currency, that is the answer. If your account is in the base (first) currency, divide by the pair’s exchange rate. Otherwise multiply by the rate that converts the quote currency into your account currency. Profit or loss for a move is pip value × number of pips.
- Units
- Lots × units per lot (100,000 for a standard lot)
- Pip size
- 0.0001, or 0.01 for JPY pairs
- conversion
- 1 ÷ pair rate (account = base) or quote→account rate (other)
Worked examples
1 standard lot of EUR/USD in a USD account
On EUR/USD the quote currency is USD, so one pip on 100,000 units is 100,000 × 0.0001 = $10. A 50-pip move is worth $500.
1 standard lot of USD/JPY at 150.00 in a USD account
A pip on a yen pair is 0.01, so 100,000 units × 0.01 = ¥1,000 per pip. Because the account is in USD, the base currency, divide by 150 to get about $6.67 per pip; a 30-pip move is $200.
2 mini lots of EUR/GBP from a USD account (GBP/USD 1.27)
Twenty thousand units × 0.0001 = £2 per pip. Converting pounds to dollars at 1.27 gives $2.54 per pip, so a 40-pip move is worth $101.60.
1 standard lot of EUR/USD at 1.0850 in a EUR account
The pip is still worth $10 in the quote currency, but the account is in euros, the base currency, so divide by the 1.0850 rate: $10 ÷ 1.085 ≈ €9.22 per pip. A 50-pip move is about €460.83.
Frequently asked questions
How much is 1 pip worth?+
For pairs quoted in US dollars such as EUR/USD or GBP/USD, traded from a USD account, one pip is worth $10 on a standard lot, $1 on a mini lot and $0.10 on a micro lot. For other pairs the value depends on the exchange rate and your account currency.
What is a pip in forex?+
A pip (percentage in point) is the standard unit of price movement in currency pairs — 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for pairs involving the Japanese yen. If EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0851, it has moved one pip.
What is the difference between a pip and a pipette?+
Most brokers quote prices to an extra decimal place. That fifth decimal (third for JPY pairs) is a pipette, worth one-tenth of a pip.
How do I calculate pip value for JPY pairs?+
Multiply your units by 0.01 to get the pip value in yen, then convert it to your account currency. For one standard lot of USD/JPY at 150, that is ¥1,000 ÷ 150 ≈ $6.67 per pip for a USD account.
How many units are in a lot?+
A standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency, a mini lot is 10,000, a micro lot is 1,000 and a nano lot is 100. Many brokers let you trade fractional lots such as 0.25.
