Where your moving money goes

About the Moving Cost Calculator

This moving cost calculator builds a line-by-line estimate of what your move will cost and puts hiring movers and a do-it-yourself truck rental side by side. Mover costs are based on crew hours × hourly rate, any per-mile charge from your quote, and a tip. DIY costs add the truck’s daily fee, its per-mile charge, fuel and any paid helpers.

Both options then share the costs every move has: packing supplies, extra valuation coverage or insurance, storage, travel (hotels, meals, flights) and set-up costs such as deposits and utility connection fees. The pie chart shows where the money goes so you can see which lines are worth trimming.

Every rate is editable because moving prices vary widely by city, season and the size of your home. Get two or three written quotes and enter the numbers here to compare like with like; long-distance movers often price by weight and distance, so convert their quote into an equivalent per-mile or hourly figure.

With the default inputs, the estimated moving cost is $1,406.00. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the moving cost calculator

  1. 1Choose whether you plan to hire movers or rent a truck yourself.
  2. 2Enter the moving distance and the crew hours and rate from a mover quote.
  3. 3Fill in the truck rental rates, fuel economy and fuel price for the DIY option.
  4. 4Add packing supplies, insurance, storage, travel and deposits.
  5. 5Compare the movers and DIY totals, then trim the biggest slices in the chart.

Formula and method

Movers = H × R × (1 + tip%) + D × m; DIY = days × daily + D × t + (D ÷ mpg) × fuel + helpers; Total = transport + extras

Professional movers are estimated as crew hours multiplied by the crew’s hourly rate, plus a tip calculated as a percentage of that labor, plus any per-mile charge multiplied by the distance. The DIY option adds the truck’s daily rental fee for each day, the rental company’s per-mile charge, fuel (distance ÷ miles per gallon × price per gallon) and whatever you pay friends or hourly helpers.

Extras — packing supplies, insurance or valuation coverage, storage, travel and deposits or utility set-up — are added to both options. Distance is one way; if you must drive the truck back or pay a drop-off fee, add it to the other costs line.

Worked examples

Local 30-mile move with a 2-person crew

Six hours at $160 an hour is $960 of labor, plus a 10% tip of $96, for $1,056. Adding $150 of supplies and $200 of deposits gives $1,406. Renting a truck instead costs $40 + $29.70 mileage + $10.50 fuel + $100 of helpers = $180.20, or $530.20 all-in.

1,000-mile move with movers

Movers charge $1,800 of labor, a $180 tip and $3,500 for 1,000 miles, so transport is $5,480. With $1,450 of supplies, insurance, travel and deposits the move costs $6,930. Driving a rental truck yourself would cost about $2,790.

Same long move, DIY truck

Four truck days cost $240, mileage is $500, fuel for 1,000 miles at 9 mpg and $3.60 is $400, and helpers are $200: $1,340 of transport. With the same $1,450 of extras the DIY move costs $2,790 — $4,140 less than movers.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire movers?+

Local movers usually charge by the hour for a crew and truck, so the cost depends on how much you own and how far you go. Long-distance movers typically price by shipment weight and distance. Always get written, in-home or video estimates from more than one company.

Is it cheaper to rent a truck or hire movers?+

A DIY truck rental is usually much cheaper in cash, but you pay with your time, effort and risk of damage or injury. The gap shrinks for small local moves and grows for long-distance moves where movers charge per mile or by weight.

How much should I tip movers?+

There is no fixed rule. Many people tip around 10–15% of the labor cost for a full-day move, or a flat amount per mover for shorter jobs, and adjust for stairs, heavy items and care taken.

What hidden moving costs should I budget for?+

Common extras are packing materials, fuel, truck drop-off fees, parking permits, elevator reservations, storage, extra valuation coverage, cleaning, security deposits, utility connection fees and time off work.

Are moving expenses tax deductible?+

Not for most people. The federal deduction for moving expenses has been suspended since 2018, and the 2025 tax law (the One Big Beautiful Bill Act) made that permanent. It remains available to active-duty military members moving under permanent change-of-station orders; from 2026 it also covers certain intelligence-community employees. Check IRS Publication 521 for details.
