About the India SIP Calculator

This SIP calculator for India estimates what a monthly systematic investment plan (SIP) in a mutual fund could grow to in rupees. Enter your monthly SIP amount, the annual return you expect, the number of years and — if you plan to raise your SIP with salary hikes — an annual step-up percentage. It shows the maturity value, the total amount you invest, the wealth gained and what the corpus is worth in today’s rupees after inflation.

It is built for salaried investors planning goals such as a house down payment, a child’s education or retirement, and for anyone comparing equity, hybrid or debt fund SIPs. Results are shown in Indian digit grouping (lakh and crore) in the insights.

Like the SIP calculators published by most Indian fund houses, it assumes each instalment is invested at the start of the month and grows at the annual rate divided by 12, compounded monthly. Mutual fund returns are market-linked and not guaranteed, and the figures are before capital gains tax — use the SIP LTCG tax calculator to estimate the tax on redemption.

With the default inputs, the maturity value is ₹5,045,760.00. Change any value above to recalculate instantly.

How to use the india sip calculator

  1. 1Enter your monthly SIP amount in rupees.
  2. 2Enter an expected annual return — for example 10–12% for diversified equity funds over the long term.
  3. 3Choose the number of years you will continue the SIP.
  4. 4Optionally add an annual step-up and an inflation rate.
  5. 5Review the maturity value, wealth gained and the year-by-year table.

Formula and method

FV = P × [(1 + i)^n − 1] ÷ i × (1 + i), where i = annual return ÷ 12 and n = months

For a flat SIP, each monthly instalment P is invested at the start of the month and compounds at the monthly rate i (annual return ÷ 12) until maturity. Summing all instalments gives the annuity-due formula above, which is the method used by most Indian mutual fund SIP calculators.

With a step-up, the instalment is fixed for 12 months and then rises by the step-up percentage each year; the calculator adds up every instalment’s future value month by month. The inflation-adjusted value divides the maturity amount by (1 + inflation)^years. Actual fund returns are calculated from daily NAVs and vary from year to year, so treat the result as an estimate.

Worked examples

₹10,000 a month for 15 years at 12%

Investing ₹10,000 at the start of every month for 180 months at 1% a month grows to about ₹50.46 lakh. You invest ₹18 lakh, so estimated returns are about ₹32.46 lakh. At 6% inflation the corpus is worth roughly ₹21.06 lakh in today’s rupees.

₹5,000 a month for 20 years at 12% with a 10% step-up

Starting at ₹5,000 and raising the SIP by 10% each year, the instalment reaches about ₹30,580 a month in year 20. Total investment is about ₹34.37 lakh and the corpus grows to roughly ₹99.44 lakh — about double the ₹49.96 lakh a flat ₹5,000 SIP would build.

₹25,000 a month for 10 years at 10%

A ₹25,000 monthly SIP for 10 years at 10% a year puts in ₹30 lakh and grows to about ₹51.64 lakh, an absolute return of about 72%.

Frequently asked questions

How is SIP return calculated?+

SIP calculators treat each monthly instalment as a separate investment that compounds until maturity, usually using the annual return ÷ 12 as the monthly rate with instalments at the start of each month. Actual fund returns are measured with XIRR because each instalment is invested for a different period.

What is a good SIP return in India?+

Diversified equity mutual funds have delivered roughly 10–12% a year over long periods, though returns vary widely and are not guaranteed. Debt funds usually return less. Use a conservative rate for goal planning and review it every year.

What is a step-up SIP?+

A step-up (or top-up) SIP automatically increases your monthly instalment by a fixed percentage or amount each year. Raising the SIP by 10% a year in line with salary increases can nearly double the final corpus over 20 years.

Is SIP income taxable?+

Gains are taxed when you redeem units. For equity funds, gains on units held over 12 months are long-term capital gains taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh a year, and short-term gains are taxed at 20% (rates in force since 23 July 2024). Each SIP instalment has its own holding period.

What is the minimum SIP amount?+

Most mutual funds accept SIPs from ₹500 a month, and some from ₹100. There is generally no upper limit, although you need a completed KYC to invest.

Can I stop or pause a SIP?+

Yes. SIPs in open-ended funds can be paused or stopped at any time through your fund house or platform, and units already bought stay invested. ELSS units carry a three-year lock-in per instalment.
