About the Implantation Calculator

This implantation calculator estimates when a fertilized egg is likely to implant in the uterus and, from that, when a home pregnancy test can first pick up the hCG hormone. Enter the first day of your last menstrual period and your usual cycle length, or your ovulation date if you tracked it with ovulation tests, basal body temperature or a scan.

It is meant for anyone in the “two-week wait” who wants to know when implantation cramping or spotting might appear and how soon testing makes sense. Implantation usually happens 6 to 12 days after ovulation, most often around days 8 to 10, and hCG only starts rising once it has occurred — which is why testing too early often gives a false negative.

When you enter a period date, ovulation is assumed to be 14 days before your next expected period (cycle length minus 14). If your cycles are irregular or you know your luteal phase is shorter or longer, use the ovulation-date option for a better estimate. All dates are estimates based on typical timing, not a medical assessment.

How to use the implantation calculator

  1. 1Choose whether to calculate from your last period or a known ovulation date.
  2. 2Enter the date — and your average cycle length if using your period.
  3. 3Read the most likely implantation day and the full 6–12 DPO window.
  4. 4Plan your pregnancy test for the reliable-test date, or the earliest date if you use a sensitive test.
  5. 5Check the day-by-day table to see what is happening during the two-week wait.

Formula and method

Ovulation = LMP + (cycle length − 14); Implantation = Ovulation + 6 to 12 days (most likely +9); Reliable test = Ovulation + 14

If you enter your last period, ovulation is estimated as the cycle length minus 14 days after the first day of that period, because the luteal phase (ovulation to next period) is usually about 14 days. If you enter an ovulation date it is used directly.

Research following pregnancies from ovulation found implantation occurring 6 to 12 days after ovulation, with the large majority on days 8, 9 or 10, so the calculator reports that window and day 9 as the most likely single day. hCG becomes detectable in urine a few days after implantation, so a sensitive test may turn positive from about 10 days past ovulation, and a test on the day of the missed period (14 days past ovulation) is far more reliable. The due date is ovulation plus 266 days.

Worked examples

28-day cycle, period started 1 September 2026

With a 28-day cycle, ovulation is estimated on day 14 — 15 September. Implantation is possible from 21 to 27 September and most likely on 24 September. The period would be due on 29 September, the best day to test, and conception that cycle gives a due date of 8 June 2027.

32-day cycle

A 32-day cycle puts ovulation 18 days after the period started, on 23 October. Implantation is most likely around 1 November; a sensitive test could turn positive from 2 November, but testing on 6 November is more reliable.

Known ovulation date from an LH test

Ovulating on 20 December opens the implantation window on 26 December (6 DPO), with the most likely day 29 December and the window closing on 1 January. A reliable test date is 3 January.

Frequently asked questions

How many days after ovulation does implantation occur?+

Implantation usually happens 6 to 12 days after ovulation, and most often on day 8, 9 or 10. It takes about 5–6 days for the embryo to reach the uterus and a few more to attach to the lining.

What does implantation bleeding look like?+

If it happens, implantation bleeding is usually light spotting that is pink or brown rather than red, lasts from a few hours to 2 days and does not get heavier like a period. Many people have no implantation bleeding at all.

How soon after implantation can I take a pregnancy test?+

hCG enters the blood soon after implantation but needs a few days to reach levels urine tests can detect. Most people get a reliable positive from about 3–4 days after implantation, which is around the day the period is due.

Can I get a positive pregnancy test at 10 DPO?+

Some people do with a sensitive early-result test, but many pregnancies are not detectable yet at 10 days past ovulation. A negative at 10 DPO does not rule out pregnancy; test again on or after the missed period.

What are signs of implantation?+

Possible signs include light spotting, mild cramping, breast tenderness and a small temperature dip on a BBT chart, but they overlap heavily with normal premenstrual symptoms, so a pregnancy test is the only reliable way to know.
