About the Image Format Converter

This image format converter changes a picture from one file type to another in your browser. Upload a PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF image, choose JPG, PNG or WebP as the output, set the quality for lossy formats and download the converted file. It covers the everyday conversions people search for: PNG to JPG to shrink screenshots, WebP to JPG or PNG for apps that do not open WebP, and JPG or PNG to WebP for faster websites.

Because JPG cannot store transparency, the converter fills transparent areas with a background colour you choose (white by default) and warns you when transparency will be lost. PNG output is lossless and keeps transparency, and WebP keeps transparency while producing much smaller files. The file is converted locally with the HTML canvas, so nothing is uploaded.

Converting cannot restore quality that a lossy format has already discarded: turning a JPG into a PNG keeps its existing artefacts and usually makes the file bigger. Animated GIFs are converted from their first frame only, and colour profiles and EXIF metadata are not carried over.

How to use the image format converter

  1. 1Upload or drop the image you want to convert.
  2. 2Choose the output format: JPG, PNG or WebP.
  3. 3For JPG or WebP, set the quality — 90% or higher keeps photos looking original.
  4. 4If converting a transparent image to JPG, pick a background colour.
  5. 5Click Download to save the converted file.

Formula and method

Decoded bitmap = width × height × 4 bytes (RGBA)
JPG output: pixel = α × colour + (1 − α) × background

Every conversion decodes the source into a full RGBA bitmap — four bytes per pixel for red, green, blue and alpha — and then re-encodes it with the browser’s canvas encoder. PNG output is lossless; JPG and WebP output are lossy, with the quality value (1–100%) controlling how much fine detail is discarded to save space.

Because JPG has no alpha channel, each partly transparent pixel is blended over the background colour in proportion to its opacity, so soft edges and shadows stay smooth rather than turning black. The uncompressed size shown is the memory the image needs while converting, not the size of the output file.

α
Pixel opacity, from 0 (transparent) to 1 (opaque)
RGBA
Red, green, blue and alpha channels, 1 byte each

Worked examples

Transparent PNG logo to JPG

JPG cannot store transparency, so the transparent background becomes white. A 1920 × 1080 image needs 1920 × 1080 × 4 = 8.29 MB of memory while it is converted.

WebP download to PNG

PNG supports transparency and is lossless, so the WebP converts with nothing further lost — though the PNG is usually several times larger than the WebP.

Camera JPG to WebP for a website

A JPG has no transparency to keep. Re-encoding the 12 MP photo as WebP at 80% quality typically gives a noticeably smaller file for faster page loads.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PNG to JPG without a black background?+

Transparent PNG pixels have no colour, and some converters turn them black. This tool blends them over a background colour you choose — white by default — so logos and cut-outs look clean.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?+

No. PNG is lossless, so it will not add any further loss, but the artefacts already baked into the JPG stay. The PNG will usually be much larger than the original JPG.

Why can’t I open WebP files?+

Older software such as some versions of Windows Photo Viewer and Microsoft Office do not support WebP. Converting to JPG (for photos) or PNG (for graphics with transparency) makes the image open anywhere.

Is WebP better than PNG and JPG?+

WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency, and is usually smaller than equivalent JPG or PNG files. All current major browsers support it, so it is a good choice for websites.

Why did the converter give me a PNG when I chose WebP?+

A few browsers, notably Safari, can display WebP but cannot encode it from a canvas. The tool detects this and warns you; use Chrome, Edge or Firefox to create WebP files.
